Eric's suggestions are probably the best place to start. Ask your 
questions in ruby-talk, as well. You might get more responses there.

I wrote an extension based on cogent's datahub and SRR IPC, and it used 
to work with their linux port (from qnx), which is implemented as a 
linux kernel module. It has both synchronous and asynchronous messages. 
I've never released it (in part because the linux port never looked like 
a very well supported project), but it did seem to work well.
