Yes, there was... but why would it try the second one if the first one 
succeeded?

Interestingly, though, it now runs successfully. I have no idea what is 
different: I did nothing to the readline library, but running it again I 
get Ruby readline support built OK. I was seeing errors saying that 
libruby-static was out of date, so I did a make clean and a make, and 
everything just worked.

There are days when I hate computers.
