[ruby-talk:11699] String#delete! question

Hello --

OK, in spite of having fallen into the equivalent of the class Unix
'test' trap (after 11 years of using/administering *nix), I am still
willing to go out on a limb and say that I find the following behavior
surprising in a number of ways:

   [graphics:~/ruby]$ cat delete.rb
   #!/usr/local/bin/ruby -w

   s = "abc"
   s.delete!
   puts s

   s = "abc"
   r = s.delete!
   puts s
   [graphics:~/ruby]$ ruby delete.rb
   ab
   abc
   [graphics:~/ruby]$ ruby -v delete.rb
   ruby 1.7.0 (2001-01-23) [sparc64-linux]

   abc
   [graphics:~/ruby]$

And running it on a different machine/version:

   candle:~/hacking/ruby$ ruby delete.rb
   abc

   candle:~/hacking/ruby$ ruby -v delete.rb
   ruby 1.6.2 (2001-01-18) [i586-linux]
   abc
   bc
   candle:~/hacking/ruby$

I don't see why delete! with no arguments would change a string at
all, much less change it in such a variety of ways, differently
with the -v flag, etc.

(Then again, I'm not sure why String#delete! doesn't complain about
having no arguments.)

I admit I have only glanced at, not really scrutinized, the source, so
far. Lazily hoping to hear from one or more people who've already
done so ... :-)
