Pretty Printing more widely
From:

ruby-core #3315
May I propose the following patch (done against the 1.9.0 nightly
snapshot but applicable to 1.8.x I think)? Its purpose:
Presenlty one can print to a file or standard output like this
greetings = { "English" => "Hello!",
"Esperanto" => "Saluton!",
"Latin" => "Salve!" }
open("greetings.txt","w"){|fp|
puts greetings["English"]
fp.puts greetings["English"]
print greetings["Esperanto"]
fp.print greetings["Esperanto"]
pp greetings
## but
pp greetings, fp
}
i.e one can must use different syntax for pp
My patch would allow
pp greetings
fp.pp greetings
to reflect the orthogonality of the other methods.
Whilst it was trivial for me to fix I had to delve into pp.rb to
find out that this was possible.
IO doesn't have the p method, but since pp is more readable, I
consider it more useful, and thus a stronger candidate for inclusion
in IO than p would be.
