The significance of aliases vs synonyms

From: "Berger, Daniel" <Daniel.Berger@...>
Date: 2007-11-08 16:18:01 UTC
List: ruby-core #13301
The behavior below is the result of not using rb_define_alias() in the
source where it probably ought to:

irb(main):005:0> m1 = Array.instance_method(:size)
=> #<Method: Array#size>
irb(main):006:0> m2 = Array.instance_method(:length)
=> #<Method: Array#length>
irb(main):007:0> m1 == m2
=> true

irb(main):008:0> m3 = Array.instance_method(:map)
=> #<Method: Array#map>
irb(main):009:0> m4 = Array.instance_method(:collect)
=> #<Method: Array#collect>
irb(main):010:0> m3 == m4
=> false

If you look in array.c, for example, you'll see this:

rb_define_method(rb_cArray, "map", rb_ary_collect, 0);

Which, IMHO, ought to be:

rb_define_alias(rb_cArray, "map", "collect");

Using a synonym (as the source does now for the most part) instead of an
alias causes a lot of unexpected Method#== failures.

Regards,

Dan

PS - Interesting fact: there are only 5 _actual_ aliases in the core
classes. The rest are synonyms.
