[ruby-list:29393] Re: Ruby mascot proposal

      Subject: [ruby-talk:14121] Ruby mascot proposal
についてのお話にて Guy N Hurst さん曰く…
(G == "Guy N. Hurst" <gnhurst@hurstlinks.com> さん)

ruby-talkの方でRubyのマスコットをどうこうなんて話が出てました.
ruby-listでも以前話題になって人気投票してたと思うんですが,
ちょっと立ち消えちゃいましたかね(^_^;

>> I think the Ruby community should adopt some kind of an icon or mascot.

In article 14121, <3AE4D1E2.23208D94@hurstlinks.com>
G> Back in [ruby-talk:01467] I discovered the ruby-crowned kinglet.
G> Let me note that it has many aspects suited to make it an excellent
G> mascot/logo for Ruby:
G>
G> - ruby crown: gem of a language
G> - kinglet: Ruby rules!
G> - harmonious, melodic: Ruby's "harmonious beauty" [ruby-talk:12606]
G> - small but powerful: concise code does a lot for you
G> - charming to those first encountering it
G>
G> With the upcoming conference, it became more urgent to have an
G> official mascot for ruby.
G>
G> I have commissioned some artists to make a representation
G> of a Ruby-crowned kinglet (song bird) into a logo/icon.
G> They have an initial *prototype* in black-and-white, and I have
G> asked them to make some follow-up styles for it with color.
G>
G> They also suggested using a female to represent the
G> complexity, naturalness, and dynamic aspects of ruby.
G> I asked them to at least make it 'fit' by using Japanese 'anime' style,
G> and I also sent them the ruby-chan made by a japanese rubyist.
G> The ruby-chan is probably not going to work as a sole mascot,
G> but may be good as a character that interacts with others to
G> introduce or even explain ruby, like in a tutorial... so in
G> other words, it could serve as a supplemental character.
G> (Could even still have the bird flying around her ;-)
G> On the other hand, it could be avoided altogether.
G>

G>
G> Meanwhile, if anyone else thinks Ruby should have a different
G> logo/mascot, then send artwork along with an explanation/rationale
G> to me via email or post. Your submission may be posted publicly.
G>
G> If there is overwhelming opposition to having the ruby-crowned
G> kinglet as the official logo/mascot, speak up now or forever
G> hold your peace :-). If you speak up, be prepared to supply
G> artwork and an explanation. So far only one person has provided
G> an alternative, but I am not sure if he is willing to make it
G> publicly available... (tapo, comment?)
G>
